JOSH TREADWAY
MACASSAR EBONY AND BIRDSEYE MAPLE
BRIDGED FOUR POINT

Here's a terrific cue from Josh Treadway.  It's a four pointer from maple and ebony, with bridged points, overlapping boxes in the butt sleeve, nice inlay work and custom joint protectors with matching ringwork.  According to Josh, its design is inspired by art deco furniture.

In spite of his relatively young age, Josh has almost become one of the elder statesmen in the cue industry.  I've known him since he worked behind the counter of my local pool hall in St. Louis when he was just a young teenager, and watched as he transitioned through an apprenticeship with cuemaker Jim Buss, eventually buying his shop and striking out totally on his own.  Today, he is one of the cuemakers that other cuemakers come to for advice.  And, he has a waiting list on custom orders of over two years.

The forearm is made from Macassar ebony, while the points and boxes are from birdseye maple.

The overlapping box pattern in the butt sleeve is always one of  my favorite designs.  They're a lot of work to build, requiring a lot of hand veneer work, mitered corners and strict accuracy.

Within each of the boxes in the butt sleeve is a series of small diamonds built from single ebony veneers, along with small ebony circles and little "micro" dots of maple within each circle.  Don't underestimate the amount of work that went into building this stick.

He uses the same diamond/dot pattern in the base of each point that he uses in the boxes in the butt sleeve.

It's easy to get caught up in all the work in a cue, and the allure of its overall attractiveness, but keep in mind that Josh builds some of the best playing cues around.  They always have a very solid hit, very good balance, just the right amount of stiffness, and great feedback.  Every time I hit just a few balls with one of his cues I'm reminded of why his cues were so successful right from the start.

Josh's points are always long, sharp and even.

Bridged points (veneers connecting each point at their base) always a lot to the overall look of a cue.  Again, it's extra work for the cuemaker, but something that I think is well-worth the extra time, and cost.

The wrap is a very pretty black mission grain pigskin.  It looks good, feels good, and will wear well over time.

A nice feature of Josh's cues is that the rings are all inlaid.  What this means is that all his ringwork lines up perfectly.

Nice, clean veneer work, and very sharp points.

The joint, ferrules, butt cap and joint protector tops are all made from Juma.

As already mentioned, it comes with a matching set of joint caps, made from the same birdseye maple with white Juma tops and matching ringwork.  The butt cap is engraved with his "T" logo, and each shaft cap is engraved with the numbers 1 and 2 respectively.

It is built with a stainless steel pin with radial thread in a flat-faced joint.  It is 58 inches long, and weighs 18.6 ounces (14.8, 3.8, 3.8).  It is fitted with double-pressed LePro tips.
