SHELBY WILLIAMS
SIX POINT EBONY
WRAPLESS CUE
Here is one of the most difficult cues to find in the market today - a rare Shelby Williams up for sale. He doesn't make many cues and anyone who gets one typically wait for years, so they don't come up for sale on the secondary market often.
This one is an ebony and east Indian rosewood cue with some dazzling veneer work, fancy rings, and lots and lots of sheer class.
The butt sleeve and nose of the cue are beautiful black ebony, and the handle and points are of rosewood. The wood quality is outstanding.
There are many great things about this cue, but I think most people will agree the real star is the veneer work. There are five layers of veneer, each separated from the other by the use of black construction paper. Each color is individually attractive, but the total effect of all is positively vibrant.
This is an exquisite cue. The inlay pattern in the butt sleeve is unique and appealing, all done in white Juma. And the ring pattern is, as usual with Williams cues, handsome and classy, also in Juma.
But here is the best part - this cue plays extremely well. Not having had the chance before to actually hit one of Shelby's cues, I was anxious to get this one to the pool room to test hit it. I was not disappointed. It is crisp and solid, with outstanding feedback and perfect balance. It plays as good as it looks.
Just look at these veneers. I have to say that this set of veneers is one of the most radiant I've ever seen.
All the points are sharp, long and even. Everything about the work in this cue is precise and meticulous. The attention to detail is endless.
Shelby's cues are universally recognized for their exquisite and unique ringwork. And it's easy to see why.
This veneer work is as good as it gets.
He uses the fancy ring pattern at the joint, with black rings on the shafts. When assembled, it is almost seamless and has a clean, classy look.
| |
The east Indian rosewood used for the grip is very pretty. It is nicely figured with long streaks of deep contrasting tones. It's a nice choice for this cue, both in the handle and the points.
It is built with a flat faced joint with a 3/8 X 10 stainless steel pin. And as with all the Shelby cues I've seen it has his name engraved above the butt cap.
It comes with two of his premium maple 13mm shafts, with Juma ferrules and Thoroughbred medium/soft layered tips. It weighs either 19.4 or 19.5 ounces depending on which shaft is used (B: 15.7, S#1: 3.7, S#2: 3.8). It is 58 inches long.
And finally, he adds a beautiful set of nicely engraved joint protectors built from ebony and Juma - the final touch to an exquisite stick.
