NORTH DEMON EBONY FOUR POINT
WITH SILVER OVERLAY INLAYS
Being one of only a couple of dealers for North Demon in the U.S (and his first) I have been handling his cues for more than two years now, and I continue to be more and more impressed with the quality of his work and the seemingly endless variety of his designs.
This cue is a good example of the kind of work Cheng at North Demon is turning out - a unique design with lots of detail and superlative workmanship.
It exemplifies the best work that is being done by just a few cuemakers - razor sharp inlays, tight fits with no glue lines, needle sharp points, distinctive veneer work and finely polished silver. Plus - the most important thing - cues that play extremely well.
This cue begins with a classic four point design, and carries it through with intricate detail, beautifully colored veneers, fancy and unique rings, and fine woods.
He builds it with four points in each direction with bridged veneer work framing all the points.
The red-green veneer combination is subtle, but still colorful.
Between each point he inlays an exquisite little silver design that adds greatly to the overall look.
In addition to doing some of the most intricate work in the industry, and doing it well, he always seems to tackle designs which require innovative work. He tackles jobs nobody else wants to do. Cheng himself describes this cue as a high difficulty build.
In all the points, he inlays a long white LBM spearhead, and within those a slightly smaller long silver spearhead. The addition of all the silver is really eye-catching, and also creates the effect of an additional layer of ebony veneer.
After all this, he takes on the tough job of inlaying an intricate silver pattern over the edge of the white spearhead inlay. I don't understand the mechanics of doing this, but cue makers tell me this is a very difficult process to do correctly.
His ring patterns are always pretty, but I think this is one of his best. They are both eye-catching, yet refined. Each ring consists of two outside rings made up of long white dashes, each surrounded in thin, fine silver, and in-between a series of white ovals, also surrounded in thin silver. Each piece of white LBM and each piece of silver is inlaid individually. They are a lot of work - a great deal of "run time" on his equipment and a lot of hand work, but they add a great deal to this cue.
He adds to the beauty of this one an elegant black ringtail lizard wrap.
As always, his points are long, even and needle-sharp.
There is a lot of silver inlay work in this cue. And the silver inlay that overlaps the long white LBM shadow "point" really adds a lot.
The veneer colors are actually red, grayish-brown, and green.
| |
As always, his miter work is as good as it gets.
He inlays his North Demon logo in the base of each shaft, and also in the butt cap. The butt cap and joint are both made of white LBM.
He includes a set of custom made matching joint caps, with matching ringwork on the butt cap. He also builds in an extension receiver which fits many of the generic extensions being built, i.e., Predator, etc.
He builds it with a titanium radial pin in a flat-faced joint. It comes with two of his premium maple, very low deflection shafts, with LBM ferrules and his own proprietary green tips.
All of this comes uniquely packaged in his own custom box with an extra tip and a block of his own privately labeled chalk. It also is accompanied by a set of weight bolts for the cue so that the owner can finetune the weight of the cue to his or her own needs.
This cue is 58 inches long and weighs exactly 19.0 ounces. This is an elegant, stunning and classy cue that will draw attention anywhere it goes.
