JERRY McWORTER
SIX-POINT
QUILTED MAPLE BURL AND EBONY
Here, straight from Jerry's shop, is a beautiful six-point cue in dyed quilted maple burl and ebony. The ebony is pure, sleek black, and the maple burl is rich reddish-brown with great natural figure. Jerry is the most recently inducted member of the American Cue Makers Hall of Fame, and very deservedly so.
Just take a good look at the richness of the color in these woods, and the beautiful contrast he strikes between them. Take special note of the brightness of the color in the dyed quilted maple burl and the richness of the wood. The advantage of the dyed burl is that the color is locked in for life. It will never change, unlike many beautiful woods that will change over time as they oxidize and fade. The dyed color is everlasting.

One of the many things I like a lot about Jerry's cues is that they all hit very much the same. He never varies the way he constructs them or the joint he uses. I test-hit this one a bit, and then a bit more, mainly because I had trouble putting it down. It has an extremely impressive hit.
This quilted maple burl is beautiful. It has a very rich color and the grain is impressive. And the ebony is nice and black. Ebony this good is getting hard to find.
He uses a single white veneer to separate the points from the deep black background. It provides a great contrast.
I love the way Jerry uses simplicity in his designs and yet makes them very elegant. The addition of the white ring above and below the wrap is a simple detail, yet there is no doubt it shows off the elegant black leather wrap, and seems to bring the whole cue together.
Another view of the butt sleeve - he caps it with black phenolic for extra durability.
Even though this is at the low end of the price range of Jerry's sticks, it is as elegant as it can be. He makes very few cues in this range - the majority of his work falls in the $4000-6500 range. This design - priced at $2675 - is the most inexpensive he makes.

The points are long, sharp and even, and the veneer work is perfect.
As with almost all his cues, he uses a lightly textured, fine black leather wrap for the handle. It's a premium leather that feels good, looks great and wears well. And as always, it is expertly applied, with a virtually invisible seam.
Jerry always makes his own joint caps, and the butt cap, with his matching double silver rings, always matches one of the woods in the cue.
| |
This cue is matched with a custom 13mm keel wood shaft with Jerry's own low-deflection alterations. It is made with a white LBM ferrule and layered Kamui medium tip.
Also as usual, he builds this one with his own 3/8X10 modified stainless steel pin in a flat-faced wood-to-wood joint. The phenolic butt cap is engraved with the McWorter name and the serial number of the cue.
As with all of Jerry's cues, he uses a double-silver ring at the joint and on the ring collars of the shaft. He adds a nice custom, matching joint protector for the butt, and his own phenolic protectors for the shafts.
This cue weighs 18.8 ounces (15.2, 3.6) and is 58 inches long. I hand pick every cue I buy from Jerry and get the best choices of his woods.
