MIKE DURBIN
FOUR POINT
STABILIZED MAPLE BURL
WITH BIRDSEYE MAPLE

Presented here is another great playing cue from the shop of Mike Durbin in Illinois.  Although Miike makes a lot of very high end cues these days, he has always taken a lot of pride in making very affordable custom cues for everyday players looking for a good-looking work-horse.  This is a good example of one.

He built this one from a spectacular piece of stabilized maple burl and some beautiful birdseye maple.  All the wood is very nice, but the burl is really special.

It's a traditional four point design, with the butt sleeve and points made from the stabilized maple burl and the nose built from the birdseye maple.

No matter what angle this wood is viewed from, it's stunning!

To add to the cue's playability and to its overall appeal, he wrapped the handle with a nicely textured black leather.

This cue was built about 10-12 years ago, but was kept in a private collection and test-hit only.  Before selling it to me, Mike took it back into his shop and polished it up, and it is in "new" condition.

He frames the points with five layers of veneer, nicely separating the two maple woods, with the predominant color effect being blue.  The individual colors are black, green, light blue, dark blue and black.

The points are all long, sharp and even.

He signs the cue under the finish on the maple between the points.

He also signs it again, under the finish, just above the butt cap.

I really like the way he dresses it up a bit with the snazzy Hoppe-style butt cap.  He uses white elforyn for the main ring, with a thinner brown phenolic ring above and a wider brown phenolic butt cap below.

He uses the same phenolic around the rings at the joint, and adds a white LBM joint.

He uses a set of black rings, each framed with a pair of thin silver rings, at the joint and on the shaft collars.  He builds it with a 3/8 X 11 G-10 resin pin.  These bolts are extremely strong and resilient.

It comes with two 12.9mm premium maple shafts with LBM ferrules and LePro tips.  It weighs 18.9 ounces (15.5, 3.4, 3.4) and is 58 inches long.  This is a great playing cue that looks sharp and hits a ton.
