DOUG BEASLEY
"GALACTIC STAR"
FOUR POINT EBONY ON EBONY
WITH BLUE VENEERS AND IVORY INLAYS
Everybody has their favorite cuemakers, and one of mine is Doug Beasley from South Carolina. He doesn't make a lot of cues, but they are always exceptional. Even his simple cues have a lot to boast. The work is exceptional, his wood choices are always great, and his finishes are phenomenal. I always know when I pick up one of his sticks that I'm going to like it - a lot.
I had a chance to pick up a couple of his high end cues that were built some time ago but are still brand new. I couldn't pass them up. This was one of them.
The wood choices for this cue were simple - all ebony. Ebony butt sleeve and forearm with four ebony points going deep into the nose.
It has stunning blue veneers, lots of ivory inlays with an especially unique inlay pattern in the butt sleeve.
Several people who have viewed this cue said the inlay pattern in the sleeve was reminiscent of Star Trek. Doug said he had nothing like this in mind when he built it, but thought the reference was interesting. So ... I'm calling it the Galactic Star, because it is certainly a star.
With a little imagination, it does look a little star-"trekkie", with the ebony as the black night sky, the ivory dots as planets, and all the small silver dots a bit like distant stars. Regardless of what it's called, it's a stunning and elegant cue.
When you see the cue full-length, it is magnificent. The ice blue veneers against the black ebony background do indeed give it a look of something intergalactic.
Keep in mind that the attractiveness of this cue is important, but it is also a playing instrument, and it is meant to play. Doug makes sticks with outstanding feel, hit and feedback. This cue could easily become someone's lifetime playing cue.
Doug's inlays are always clean and sharp. And his veneers always pretty. With this stick he chose three shades of blue - dark, not so dark and light - with a layer of white inside against the ebony points. The overall effect of "icy" blue is radiant against the black background.
He wraps the handle with a nice piece of black elephant ear leather looks very nice on the cue and adds to its overall beauty.
I love the look of this inlay pattern, the quality of the inlay workmanship and the luscious, warm tone of the ivory.
His points are always sharp and even, and very long.
As always, he engraves his DB logo into an oval of
ivory inlaid into the butt cap.
| |
A good look at the veneer colors ...
He builds it with a 3/8X10 steel pin in a flat-faced joint. It is 59 inches long and weighs 18.4 ounces (14.8, 3.6, 3.6). It comes with a pretty set of inlaid matching joint protectors and two premium maple shafts with a diameter of 13.0mm just below the ferrules. The ferrules are ivory and the tips are layered Moori brown mediums.
This is an outstanding cue by an upper echelon cue maker. He doesn't build a lot of cues and they are difficult to find. It will make someone a great playing cue, and it is stunning.
