DAVE BARENBRUGGE
COCOBOLO BUTTERFLY

As you may know, Barenbrugge cues are among the most difficult to obtain.  After years of an exclusive agreement with a reseller in Asia, he is now keeping most of his cues in the U.S.  I'm happy to be one of his few dealers through whom he is distributing his cues.  I've been waiting for some time to get a few of his well-known butterfly cues, for which he is famous.  This is one of them.

This cue is a great example of Barenbrugge's fine work.  He starts this cue with a nose of beautiful, highly figured birdseye maple and a butt sleeve of GORGEOUS cocobolo.  He adds four long points and four butterfly points of more of the same great cocobolo, veneered with more maple and cocobolo.

Dave is well-known also for his intricate ringwork.  He classifies it in three levels, and prices it accordingly.  Looking at the ringwork in this cue, it's hard to believe this is only "Level Two", it is so delicate and complicated.  Regardless, it is beautiful.  In this case, he uses maple and cocobolo to match the woods in the cue.  It's so delicate, you have to look close to see it.

He places the ringwork at all locations - at the butt cap, above and below the wrap, at the joint and on the ring collars of both shafts.

He uses a dark brown Spanish bull wrap.  This if my favorite wrap.  It is nicely textured and looks good.  Best of all, it is very practical because it feels so good in your hand when playing with it.  The dark brown color is a great complement to the overall look.

For the butt cap, he uses black phenolic, which is durable and looks perfect.

He uses the same black phenolic at the joint and it looks really nice with the fancy ringwork.  It is just pure "class."    In addition, he adds a very unique and classy joint protector with a cocobolo "cap" on it, wrapped in the same leather as the wrap.  It's a nice touch.

As usual, he uses his 3/8X10 modified pin of stainless steel with a flat-faced joint.  Also, with the attention to detail that we have come to expect from Dave, he seamlessly caps the wood around the pin, which looks good, and adds life to the cue.

This cue weighs exactly 19.0 ounces, and comes with two 13mm shafts.  It has Dave's short LBM ferrules.  This cue not only looks great, it plays great.  For someone who is attracted to butterfly designs and appreciates craftsmanship that is as good as it gets, this cue is a good buy.  I believe his cues offer great value (lots of work for the money) and are a good investment.  The cue is brand new and straight from Dave's shop.
